El interrogante que se hace, sobre si en Colombia nos estamos viendo abocados a tener dos sistemas de justicia diferentes, o, por el contrario, es sólo un sistema de justicia protectora de los derechos con una nueva interpretación de las disposiciones, dándole su verdadero sentido y alcance conforme con la Constitución Política a partir de 1991, tiene plena actualidad, y es de gran linportancia siempre que abotdemos cualquiera de los temas del derecho, en especial, los correspondientes al derecho laboral y (...) a la seguridad social integral, puesto que estos últimos conllevan implícitamente el respeto por los derechos y la dignidad humana. En Colombia se viene usando este término, desde mucho antes de la reforma al Régimen Laboral que concluyó con la expedición de la Ley 50 de 1990, y se ha seguido utilizando de manera continua cada vez que se plantea la necesidad de una reforma en este campo. ResumoEm que medida a proposta de uma nova ética para a civilização tecnológica, elaborada por Hans Jonas, possuiria o condão de convocar os cientistas para o efetivo exercício de sua responsabilidade perante à natureza ameaçada? O esclarecimento, que sua obra pretende levar a termo a respeito dos crescentes perigos associados ao progresso técnico-científico, não procura fundamentalmente refrear, em caráter emergencial, a cega compulsão de aplicação tecnológica, com os perversos efeitos associados à tecnolo gização e à mercantilização da ciência em nossos (...) dias? Com efeito, sua crítica da ideologia legitimadora do progresso tecnocientífico procura, em última instância, debelar o processo compulsivo de aplicações tecnológicas, considerado perverso em si mesmo, não se permitindo considerar de que outra forma o progresso tecnocientífico poderia vir a desenvolver-se, de modo a tornar-se efetivamente capaz de atender valores humanos, sociais e ambientais. A partir da explicitação dos impasses a que conduz a proposta de Jonas, respaldamo-nos nos estudos de Hugh Lacey para apresentar uma forma alternativa de estru turação das atividades científicas. Visando suplantar esses impasses, procuramos investigar em que medida o desejável acolhimento de valores morais, sociais e ambientais, por parte das práticas científicas e tecnológicas vigentes, poderia estar conjugado com uma experiência propriamente estética capaz de propiciar a abertura à alteridade e o acolhimento de valores alheios. A investigação do concurso de uma experiência deste teor é realizada à luz de motivos de pensamento presentes nas obras de Theodor Adorno e Herbert Marcuse.To what extent does the proposed new ethics for technological civilization, developed by Hans Jonas, have the power to convene scientists for the effective exercise of their responsibility to nature that is under threat? Does not the clarification, which his work is intended to further about the growing dangers associated with technical and scientific progress, seek basically to restrain, as a matter of emergency, the blind technological compulsion that leads to the perverse effects associated with technologizing and commercializing science today? Indeed, his critique of the legitimating ideology of techno-scientific progress ultimately intends to overcome the compulsive process of technological application, considered perverse in itself, that does not allow that other forms of techno-scientific progress could be developed that would become able to attend effectively to human, social and environmental values. Starting from the explanation of the impasses to which Jonas' proposal leads, we based ourselves on studies of Hugh Lacey in order to present an alternative way of structuring scientific activities. Aiming to overcome these impas ses, we investigate to what extent the desired attention to moral, social and environmental values by current scientific and technological practices could be connected to an aesthetic experience that is able to provide openness to otherness and the reception of foreign values. Investigating the contribution of an experience of this kind is conducted in the light of thought motifs of Theodor Adorno and Herbert Marcuse. (shrink)

In an influential article published in 1982, Bas Van Fraassen developed an argument against causal realism on the basis of an analysis of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations of quantum mechanics. Several philosophers of science and experts in causal inference -including some causal realists like Wesley Salmon- have accepted Van Fraassen’s argument, interpreting it as a proof that the quantum correlations cannot be given any causal model. In this paper I argue that Van Fraassen’s article can also be interpreted as a good (...) guide to the different causal models available for the EPR correlations, and their relative virtues. These models in turn give us insight into some of the unusual features that quantum propensicies might have. (shrink)

Using matrix iterations of ccc posets, we prove the consistency with ZFC of some cases where the cardinals on the right hand side of Cichon’s diagram take two or three arbitrary values (two regular values, the third one with uncountable cofinality). Also, mixing this with the techniques in J Symb Log 56(3):795–810, 1991, we can prove that it is consistent with ZFC to assign, at the same time, several arbitrary regular values on the left hand side of Cichon’s diagram.

El autor presenta la tecnología como una forma de cultura, que a su vez corresponde a un cierto nivel de desarrollo de lo humano. Siguiendo la historia del desarrollo de las herramientas, llega al momento en que aparece con fuerza la diferenciación entre naturaleza y tecnología, dando lugar a los productos tecnológicos. Postula que el capitalismo representa una particular manera de entender la tecnología, y describe las principales concepciones de ésta. Luego desarrolla las modificaciones en el mundo del trabajo hasta (...) su precarización actual y las transformaciones que ello conlleva en diferentes esferas. La influencia de la filosofía de Nietzsche y la asunción de “la muerte de Dios”, como punto de partida en la filosofía contemporánea, imposibilitan el mantenimiento y desarrollo de la teoría moral, entendida ésta como un conjunto de juicios que expresan un deber o una valoración de bondad o maldad de manera absoluta. Frente a esta perspectiva se impone una revitalización de la ética comprendida en un sentido más amplio al espectro moral. The Peleus of Euripides’Andromachemakes claims puzzlingly incongruous with his decrepit physical state; he threatens physical violence against the much younger Menelaus and denies his advanced age outright in conversation with Andromache. Peleus’ motivations for acting in such a way, Menelaus’ cause for acting as if these claims are true, and the literary or dramatic significance of these affairs, all pose problems which this article addresses, while also offering a first step towards a comprehensive methodology for understanding old age in Euripidean (...) drama. It presents a unified view of old men across several plays, highlighting key patterns of their interaction with old age, and applies this broad perspective to a close analysis of Peleus’ portrayal in theAndromache.It argues that old men in the plays of Euripides can be viewed generally on either side of a dichotomy between giving effective counsel or participating effectively in physical conflict. Peleus subverts this dichotomy by denying the fact of his age throughout, an action which allows him to employ the skill in speaking gained by his old age as a dramatic substitute for direct physical confrontation and to occupy the social role of a younger man in the Greek household. Since Stalbaum’s 1838 translation revived interest in Plato’s Timaeus, commentators have tended to bracket the discourse on Necessity, reading it as either mythical or mystical. This essay offers an interpretation of Necessity that is also an assertion of its importance for understanding the philosophically important conception of chora-space found therein. Beginning with throwing ourselves back into the Presocratic milieu, I examine what remains of Presocratic notions of kreon and ananke (necessity) in order to move forward a more robust interpretation of (...) the discourse on Necessity and chora-space. In The State of Southern Illinois: An Illustrated History, Herbert K. Russell offers fresh interpretations of a number of important aspects of Southern Illinois history. Focusing on the area known as “Egypt,” the region south of U.S. Route 50 from Salem south to Cairo, he begins his book with the earliest geologic formations and follows Southern Illinois’s history into the twenty-first century. The volume is richly illustrated with maps and photographs, mostly in color, that highlight the informative and straightforward (...) text. Perhaps most notable is the author’s use of dozens of heretofore neglected sources to dispel the myth that Southern Illinois is merely an extension of Dixie. Herbert Fingarett's achievements range from his assault upon the misconceived 'disease theory' of alchoholism, through social philosophy, philosophy of law, and philosophical psychology, to Chinese studies and Confucian thought. Fingarette's major works include 'The Self in Transformation' (1963), 'Self-Deception' (1969), 'Confucius---The Secular as Sacred' (1972), and 'The Meaning of Criminal Insanity' (1972). His Book, 'Heavy Drinking: The Myth of Alchoholism as a Disease' (1988), transformed the public debate on alchohol treatment and made Fingarette the target of an intense barrage (...) of abuse and vituperation from entrepreneurs in the alchohol-treatment industry. 'Rules, Rituals, and Responsibilities' contains Fingarette's intellectual autobiography, nine papers by leading scholars on different aspects of Fingarette's thought, and Fingarette's response to each of these papers. Motivated by results on interactive proof systems we investigate an ∃-∀hierarchy over P using word quantifiers as well as two types of set quantifiers. This hierarchy, which extends the polynomial-time hierarchy, is called the analytic polynomial-time hierarchy. It is shown that every class of this hierarchy coincides with one of the following Classes: ∑math image, Πmath image , PSPACE, ∑math image or Πmath image . This improves previous results by Orponen [6] and allows interesting comparisons with the above mentioned results (...) on inter-active proof systems. (shrink)
